When do we talk about behavior issues? First of all we need to know the natural behavior of our canines. If there are obvious divergencies in the natural behavior, then we talk about behavior issues. The behavior issues are just the outcome. Therefor it’s essential to find out the causes.

If you can’t fulfill your dog’s needs, your dog can develop sever behavior issues, despite the high adaptility of canines. But do you know your dog’s needs? We are talking about this topic a lot during lessons. There is no general answer valid for every dog… because every dog is unique.

Here we listed some common behavior issues. It’s possible that there are combinations. Please notice that the list isn’t conclusive.

In general anxiety is a natural behavior. Some dogs tend to suffer from a high anxiety or even panic attacks. In such situations they only have two options: fight or flight. Fight is classified into aggression. Flight means eg to run away or to hide. Why the dog is anxious varies. Thunder storms, loud noises, humans or dogs can cause this anxiety. Anyway it is important to consult a professional to show you how to deal with it.

The dogs are barking or whining constantly, or go out with just one certain person. This behavior could lead to sever difficulties for everyone involved. You could get discussions with your neighbor if the dog barks day in and out.

Aggression is a human word. It doesn’t exist in the animals world. Growling or showing the teeth is a normal behavior in the canines world, which are important for social interaction within a pack. In our world it can cause a lot of misunderstandings and problems.

There are varieties of aggression. Agression can be shown towards other dogs or also humans. There are dogs who are leash reactive and attacking other dogs, others are overprotective over their food or toy. It doesn’t matter which form of aggression your dog shows, it needs to be addressed by a professional.

The bigger and more powerful the dog, the bigger the problem. On the other hand also small dogs need to be properly educated. Let them also be dogs.

Sometimes the life of humans are so restricted that they only go for a walk at a special time, rarely get visit at home, or they are in fear of their own dog.

Constant barking can be really annoying. We can also talk about a indecent behavior. But why does the dog bark? Does he protect the house? Does he announce any danger? Or does he bark at any person approaching the house eg mailman, dogs or your expected visit? It’s conspicuous that smaller dogs more often tend to bark.

You recognize a hyper-active dog by uncontrolled leash walking skills, their bodies look like electrified. etc. They don’t know how to calm down and relaxe. These kind of dogs are a huge challenge. Humans often go for a walk where none else is around. But there are possibilities to help your dog. In fact you need to help your dog to calm down.

Your dog is a typical couch potato? You can hardly motivate the dog to go for a walk?

This is not a normal behavior and needs to be addressed. Lethargy or depression can cause serious health issues and reduce the quality of life and lifetime of our dogs.

Everyone knows this situation pretty well: the recall doesn’t work as soon as the dog is off leash. It may seem that your dog can’t hear you. These behavior can cause unpleasant circumstances and also dangerous situations. The dog can run towards a busy road, getting hit by a car etc. If you want to know more about this behavior, let me know.

Obsession means that the dog is highly focused on a specific behavior and shows kind of a displacement activity. The dogs can be obsessed by toys, food, their own tail, spinning around in circles or harming themselves.

This is a serious behavior issues which needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

The newest Louboutin, the couch, plants…everything can be destroyed.

Humans tend to say the dogs do it on purpose and feel guilty. No, they don’t. Look at it from a canine perspective and ask yourself if it could be your faut… just think about it.

When we consider the history and roots of our domesticated dogs we get a better idea why they hunt. Dogs are descended from wolves. Wolves hunt to survive. We domesticated the dogs a long time ago, bred and used them for hunting. Due to this domestication the dogs do not need to go hunting to survive nowadays. We serve them their meals but still they can turn into hunters as soon as they smell an odorous track. Hunting is like self rewarded and makes our dogs pretty happy.

Hunting is a genetic imprint and you can hardly reduce it with eg breeding.

There are specific hunting breeds like Weimaraner, Viszla or Labrador. Nowadays they are family members and rarely used as hunting dogs. But overall it’s not said that a little Pomeranian doesn’t show a hunting behavior. Some show it on a higher level than others. To change this behavior it needs a lot of work, patience and consistency.

This could be instant begging for food during humans meals, stealing food from the table or counter, attacking the vacuum cleaner, peeing in the house or jumping on humans. These mentioned behaviors can be really annoying and stressful for your relationship with your dog.

It’s more common that people have more than one dog. The problem starts when the dogs don’t get along with each other and need to be split. These situations are absolutely stressful and may end up in a shelter for one of the dogs. Why are your dogs fighting? We will find a solution.

This is like cat vs mouse. A lot of dogs are anxious at the vets. They start shaking, want to run away or hide and the treatment is more than difficult. Sometimes vets are afraid of dogs too. Every dog needs to see the vet once or more in their lives. For getting the chip, vaccinations etc. Therefore I consider it more than helpful if your dogs feels „comfortable“ at the vet – for all parties involved.

When the time comes to choose a dog, a lot of humans find it hard to decide. Just move a step backwards. Which breed fits your lifestyle the best? Do you life on the 11th floor downtown? Then you better don’t go for a Siberian Husky.

In my opinion it’s highly questionable to choose the dog only regarding their appearance. Dogs only live a certain amount of time. It’s your job and commitment to fulfill their needs. So think about it prior if you’re willing to do it. Don’t be selfish. If you need help or if you’re not sure I am more than glad to help you.

You already have a dog and you’re expecting a baby. Some may be overwhelmed and not sure how to deal with the situation. Some may be insecure and anxious. And some may be so worried about the situation that the dog ends up in an animal shelter. I would never ever judge these humans. But if you have a deep bonding with your dog based on trust, respect and love….the birth of the child would never ever be a topic or a problem.
